Member of the Month

Flight is one of Keep Running's most active members and has been with us since the beginning. Characters include Andromeda, Raincloud, Frankenstein, Hailey, Achilles, Kagu-Tsuchi, Anzhela and Soshai. The wide array of characters makes Flight a fun, creative person to RP with and the variety of breeds she uses adds a lot of color to KR.

Pack News

City Packs;; For now the three city packs are at peace, slowly gathering their ranks from recent raids human dog catchers have made on hideouts for strays. Older strays fear this is only the calm before the storm since it has been several lifetimes since the packs have been in any sort of peace.

Thunder River Pack;; The deer herds have fled the mountain valleys and at least one has crossed the Thunder River, keeping the pack fat and productive with easy hunting. New leadership has been established in the Thunder River Pack, leaving them in the guidance of an unusual wolf named Kagu-Tsuchi. The pack is smaller than it has been in years but still maintains a powerful presence among wild canines, wary of a troubling message given to them by a wandering loner.

Eagle Peak Pack;; Constant rains and no herds of deer spending the spring in the forests of the Eagle Peak are troubling this pack. They feed on small game now, circling the river and waiting for another herd to try and cross. The lack of prey has the pack leadership on edge but no bans on breeding have been placed yet. Such bans are being held out for the summer, in hopes the deer will return. One femme in the pack is pregnant with the second litter of alpha pups born to the pack bringing both hope and disdain to the wolves. Whispers of rebellion run wild through the pack but thus far, no real actions of aggression have been made.

Couple of the Month

Rowan is the Alpha of the Eagle Peak Pack and Ivy is it's Gamma Female, a rank that is mainly reserved for divining futures, reading signs and healing. Ivy is also heavily crippled which makes her an unlikely partner for an able-bodied Alpha but Rowan and Ivy are the first official couple on Keep Running. Their litter of three pups (all up for adoption) will also be its first second generation litter due on August 1st.

[ ]Rosefield Apartment Complex
Built five stories high, the Rosefield Apartment Complex used to be home to college students that went to Heartland Community College. Closed down in 1988 after a fire, the apartments have been home to the Skye Pack ever since. The fire left holes in the floors, collapsed stairways, broken windows and in some places, very weak floors. Though precarious, the apartments have yet to not shelter the pack. The possessions that weren't burned give the pack plenty of fabrics to sleep on and the uncertain stability keeps humans away. To this peaceful pack, the risk is worth that safety.

[ ]St. Tristan's Cancer Center
Built in the 1990's, the St. Tristan's Cancer Center tended to patients in the Heartland area but was shut down in 2000 for structural problems. Within weeks, the Kuvar Pack made it their home. Abandoned equipment, beds and other furniture give the pack plenty of places to sleep and hide if humans come poking around. The dogs found here are the more aggressive of the stray packs in Heartland and should be approached with great caution.

[ ]102 Mulberry Street
A collapsing Victorian-style house, 102 Mulberry Street is one the oldest houses in Heartland. Because of this, the humans don't bother to knock it down but don't bother to fix it up. Located in a quiet, mostly deserted neighborhood, the house provides the perfect gathering place for the housepets of Heartland. There's almost always one housepet or another lingering around the house, checking for news and keeping a wary eye on stray activity. This pack is a non-existent threat but tries to assert itself by setting up a barking chain to call important meetings when the strays act suspicious.

[ ]Heartland County Dog Pound
A simple brick building near the middle of town, the Heartland County Dog Pound is the end of the road for many strays and lost housepets. The place is constantly filled with panicked barking, the smell of fear and uncertainty. The kennels usually house two or three dogs a piece, sometimes mixing a lost-collar-housepet with a fight-or-flight stray. Unusual alliances have been formed when facing "the back room" and escapes, though difficult, do happen, much to the frustration of locals and dog catchers.

[ ]Martin's Memorial Park
To break up the concrete jungle that is Heartland, the city created a large park about five years ago complete with a small pond, winding sidewalks, two playgrounds and benches under shady oaks. The playground is very popular with humans and their pets but is also a good hang out for strays. A well cleaned stray can usually lounge in the sun without being bothered by humans or dog catchers or, for the rare stray that likes humans, they might get to play with a few human pups.

[ ]Oscar's Diner
Family owned since 1989, Oscar's Diner is a popular eatery for humans and dogs alike. Backed up to a vacant lot, Oscar's leaves its garbage vulnerable to local strays in need of a quick meal. Since the owners are the rare sort of human that tolerates dogs fairly well, strays can usually get a bite without too much trouble if they keep the noise down. The downside however, the diner is frequented by dog catchers on their lunch break.

[ ]Sacred Heart Graveyard
One of the oldest places in Heartland, the graveyard is quiet and secluded. A few old trees dot the landscape but most of it is dominated by headstones, old and new, covering most of the area. The rumor is the graveyard was first used during the Civil War but, since Heartland wasn't even founded then, not many people believe it. Dogs can come here to avoid humans since no one usually bothers them here. At night the place is deserted making it a safe place to sleep, even though few dogs brave the creepy place at night.

[ ]City Dog Park
A few blocks down from Martin Memorial Park is a fenced in dog park complete with obstetrical course where pet owners bring their pups to play. Housepets do most of their socializing here but also tend to be mocked by the occasional stray. Sadly the park is also a popular dumping ground for puppies and grown dogs. Dogs left here until after dark are rounded up and carted off to the pound.

[ ]Drifter's Row
Drifter's Row is the downside of Heartland, the part of town where humans ignore humans and strays can wander freely. Homeless humans wander here in the dense maze of back streets and alleys, out of sight and out of mind. Old oil barrels and tents are common sights here and there are often multiple brawls over the bare essentials of human life. Strays wander freely here, sometimes company and sometimes thieves in the night for the unfortunate humans that live here.

[ ]Blue Heron Lake
Amazingly popular in the summer, Blue Heron Lake is a peaceful little lake on the very edge of Heartland's city limits. Rocky ledges provide places to dive and the water is always cool. On the north side is a small waterfall that feeds the lake from Cold Brier Creek. Large trees surround the lake giving it the perfect atmosphere for a couple's retreat and provides a safe place for pups to play on the shores when humans aren't around.

[ ]Landslide
About three years ago, tons of rain caused the Thunder River to flood and caused a massive landslide from Grey Mountain/Eagle Peak. In addition to crippling the wolf packs, it created a landslide. The boulders, ripped up trees and other debris filled in a deep ravine near Blue Heron Lake creating a hill of boulders. The ravine is unsafe because the boulders could shift at any time and crush a dog with ease.

[ ]Tri-County Landfill
Well outside of Heartland is a large junkyard full of everything from old mattresses to broken dishwashers. The garbage of humans turns into the treasures of strays making this a common hunting ground and shelter for Heartland's strays. Occasionally a wolf or coyote will also wander in to stir things up, rummaging through the garbage when they are truly desperate for food or shelter. The landfill is roomy enough for canines to live here for months and not cross paths but is also quite dangerous when something gives way and sends a pile of trash tumbling.

[ ]Red Ridge Farm (1 sub-board)
Just outside of Heartland's city limits, down a lonesome dirt road is Red Ridge Farm, acres and acres of overgrown fields, creeks and pockets of forest. The barbed wire fences are rusted, the house like a closed crypt and the barn leaning to one side. Regardless, the farm provides amazing bird and deer hunting along with decent shelter from bad weather. Humans more or less ignore the place so loners and gangs find the most use for the place.

[ ]Goldman's Plain
Less of a plain and more of a massive field, Goldman's Plain is an expanse of unused farmland that was left undeveloped when Heartland planned an expansion in 1995. The plain is several acres of waving tall grass, wild winter wheat and unchecked brush surrounded by a ring of trees and loose woodland. Coyotes find particular comfort in this place, hunting birds, rabbits and deer with relative ease when there aren't any lone wolves or stray dogs to compete with.

[ ]Moss Pond
Near the entrance of the Grey Mountain Park is a large pond surrounded by mossy old oak trees and almost always covered in green algae. The canines all adopted the nickname "Moss Pond" for the place and it is a neutral spot. No one fights or hunts here, obeying laws as old as canine-kind. There is almost always someone hanging around the pond, often loners looking for a touch of company or lonesome bachelors with their eyes open for a pretty lady.

[ ]Thunder River Territories (3 sub-boards)
Roughly five miles outside of Heartland is where the Grey Mountain National Park begins. Where the park begins also begins the territory of the Thunder River Pack, a relatively neutral pack of wolves that live along the banks of the large river. Their territory is mostly woodland and they claim hunting rights fairly far down the river in both directions, a constant annoyance to the Eagle Peak Pack.

[ ]Eagle Peak Territories (3 sub-boards)
Grey Mountain National Park is also known as the Eagle Peak because many bald eagle nest along the Thunder River. The mountain itself is formidable and steep, deeply forested and scarred with deep ravines and hidden hollows. The wolves that live here are sure-footed and enduring, commanding a large portion of territory but constantly coming at odds with the Thunder River Pack about the river. Currently, the Eagle Peak wolves can not approach the river for several miles and make due with mountain streams or water.
